Armor

The availability of armor depended on monetary and material resources, manufacturing capabilities, and quality of craftsmen. And while the bulk of most armies were made of men with relatively limited training, armor did make a difference in units trying to resist better armed troops. Greek soldiers purchased their own armor or took it as a trophy from earlier battles. In medieval Europe, knights were obligated to provide for their own arms and armor, while in the 17th century, European monarchies, in particular the Swede King Gustavus Adolphus, created one of the first European professional armies that had both standard uniforms and equipment as well as training.

Among the principal benefits of armor was the ability to take an attack without complete incapacity. The helmet was basic to every army the world over. Some were complete metal masks while others were simply wagging feather. The composition of body armor ranged from the most rudimentary materials (cloth, wood, studs, leather) to heavier and protective metal (mail, plate).
